1 October 1976. Letter. Wonderful Typed Letter on personal letterhead SIGNED "Steve" to the actress Ruth Gordon about the film she starred in, HAROLD AND MAUDE. In full: "I told Gar [playwright Garson Kanin, Gordon's husband] the other day that I finally caught up with 'Harold and Maude' -- in Vienna, no less, and with subtitles in both German and French. It left a gorgeous and unimpaired vision of the top third of the screen. Up there, I thought you were terrific. No, really -- I'd been resistingthe movie for a long time (it sounded so wet in description) but came away loving it. And I thought you were just plain wonderful." He was also known for writing the lyrics for WEST SIDE STORY (1957) and GYPSY (1959). He received an Academy Award, 8 Tony Awards (more than any other composer), 8 Grammy Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, and a 2015 Presidential Medal of Freedom.
