AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS) to his Mother
New York: [17 October]. Letter. A ten-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS) on both sides of five 5-1/2" x 6-3/4" sheets of personal stationery to his mother. In part: "Well, we've moved, though by no means settled -- that part is still to come. But children, cats, furniture, everything are shifted around the block. The books are still in piles on the floor, the rugs are not down, the coal has just arrived, But the painters, floorscrapers etc., have finally finished their jobs, and for the first time in years we are living in an absolutely clean home. It won't stay clean very long of course, but at least we'll have a week or so to remember. It's like this [here Benet has drawn a floor-plan of the new apartment]...." He then describes the physical layout of the apartment, room by room, and continues: "I think it will work out very well. It is not as sunny as 220 and you hear the El more. On the other hand, it's a much decenter block and there is no gang in the street.... Much love to you both from a deeply moved family. Stephanie says we've got a real residence now and she's going to bring all her friends home. I hope she doesn't till we get the windows washed.... SWB the moving man."
