AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED to his Cousin
Isle of Wight: 2 June 1863. Letter. One-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER (4-1/4" x 7") SIGNED "A. Tennyson" on the verso to the poet's cousin Clara [Tennyson d'Eyncourt]. A warm, somewhat humorous note, in which Tennyson thanks her for her kindness and ends with praise: “What a beautiful hand you write!” According to the article "Cousin Clara Vere de Vere" by Alice Chandler [VICTORIAN POETRY, Vol. 5, No. 1 (Spring, 1967), pp. 55-57], the poet’s brother Charles may have been in love with Clara and that her refusal of him may have provoked Tennyson to write his famous ballad—"Lady Clara Vere de Vere”--as a rebuke.
