Folio (11-5/8" x 16-3/16") bound in contemporary half brown leather with leather corners and gilt lettering on the spine. Includes the complete year of 1870 with issues beginning January 1 and ending with December 31; 872 pages plus supplements including the complete first American publication of THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD by Charles Dickens. Also printed here is most of MAN AND WIFE by Wilkie Collins. Illustrated with numerous wood engravings including many of various sizes by Thomas Nast, with a full-page depiction of children with a Santa Claus Jack-in-the-Box, as well as several fine Winslow Homers, most full-page, including "Spring Blossoms," "The Dinner Horn," "On the Bluff at Long Branch, at the Bathing Hour," and the magnificent double spread "1860 – 1870," a grand-scale illustration featuring several scenes reflecting on the decade of the Civil War. Also included are fine double-spread views of New York City and Paris. Interesting articles on a variety of topics, usually illustrated with engravings. Each issue also includes a number of advertisements. A treasure trove of articles and illustrations from the Gilded Age. The first three issues with a horizontal light brown line through centers of front covers, chips and tears to edges of some page with a few small stains; a long closed tear through the front cover of the August 6 issue; light toning. Some peeling of cloth on front cover; chip to leather at the base of the spine with a partial split to the top front spine edge; binding tight. Very Good. Item #022451
