COLLECTION OF ORIGINAL PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHS
[1930s]. Photograph. A collection of 30 mostly formal original photograph portraits of Dorothy Parker, all approximately 8" x 10" with 8 of them including her husband, screenwriter Alan Campbell, and 22 of them of Parker alone or with her dog. None of the photographs is signed by photographer or subjects; but the 22 portraits of Parker are all from the same session photographed by Edward Steichen, all with white numbers in a corner seemingly indicating that at least 61 photos were taken of her at this session. One photograph from the session not present was used in the May 1932 issue of VANITY FAIR and credited to Steichen in the magazine. An engraved proof of that photograph sent to Parker for approval is present here. While Parker smiles in several of the photos with Campbell, there is only the hint of a smile in one of her formal portraits. A wonderful and scarce collection of photographs, most by a renowned photographer, of this acerbic writer. A couple of photos with tears but most are Near Fine or Fine. Item #022397
Parker and Campbell produced over 20 scripts made into movies, most famously the script of the Oscar-winning A STAR IS BORN. The couple was married from 1933 to 1947, and again from 1950 until 1963 when Campbell died of an apparent suicide.
