LAMENTS FOR THE LIVING

New York: The Viking Press, 1930. First Edition. hardcover. Collection of short stories. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on a front blank: "To Zoila Conan--/with best wishes/and gratitude to her/for wanting this/extremely unimpressive/signature--/Dorothy Parker/Hollywood--." At the bottom of the page, in a different hand, is the date "Oct. 26, 1935." Zoila Conan worked as an actress, stage manager, and story analyst in Hollywood. Born in Mexico she appeared in several films of the 1930s and was famously photographed by William Mortensen in 1923. She was a secretary for William A. Wellman when he directed the Oscar-winning film A STAR IS BORN which had Dorothy Parker and her husband Alan Campbell as screenwriters and which began filming in October 1936. Parker must have inscribed this to Conan when she was working on the script in Hollywood. Browning to endpapers and to one text page from a newspaper clipping once laid in; newspaper reproduction of a photo of Parker pasted to front endpaper. Very Good in a Very Good dustwrapper.
