AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS)
Boston: 25 January 1916. Letter. A two-page letter on both sides of United States Supreme Court 6-3/8" x 7-1/4" stationery SIGNED by the Justice to lawyer Julian Mitchell. Holmes regretfully turns down an invitation to speak in Charleston, South Carolina: "I cannot spare from my Duties the energy necessary to do anything worthy of such an audience." Holmes was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1902 by President Theodore Roosevelt, a position he held until his retirement in 1932. Holmes became famous for his liberal interpretations of the U.S. Constitution and was known as the "Great Dissenter" because of his disagreement with the views of his colleagues on the Court. His lectures on common law at the Lowell Institute in Boston, collected as THE COMMON LAW (1881), are considered a classic of legal writing.
