AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS)
n.p. [1939]. Letter. Three-page handwritten letter on two 8-1/2" x 11" sheets SIGNED "Randall" to Philip Blair Rice, editor of THE KENYON REVIEW. The poet begins by describing his upcoming travels and describing his new job. "My job at Texas sounds swell, and I'm going to write Mr. Ransom a fan letter love letter, I mean." Jarrell taught at the University of Texas at Austin from 1939 to 1942. "I stayed with Allen [Tate] a couple of days early in the summer, and had an awfully good time. We agreed wonderfully about poetry, even to the extent of each confessing we didn't think Coleridge's criticism was all it's cracked up to be. That was a real delight to me. I read MAN'S FATE for the third time; I like it better every time.... I've played tennis once in a month; and the I'd had three big drinks, and I'd just laugh with pleasure every time I hit the ball. I could see the other player, and the other court, you understand -- I just wasn't distinguishing any details. I do hope you liked my version of [Louis] MacNeice; I couldn't make a very specific or detailed review, since I think about half the details in the book are wrong or useless because so commonplace. I hope I handled it right; I had fun with the prose." Fine content from this important poet. Folds from mailing. Near Fine. Item #022176
