The one-hundredth publication of the Arion Press contains the text of the 1855 first edition with an introduction by Helen Vendler. Of a total of 290 copies this is #167 of 275 with handset type on dampened handmade paper. The frontispiece portrait of Whitman from the first edition, a steel engraving based on a daguerreotype from 1854, is reproduced at twice size in sepia ink. A green grass device appears on the title and colophon pages and is reproduced in gilt on the spine of the book. Laid in are the prospectus, a sample leaf from the book, and a letter from the publisher along with a subscription sheet. A sumptuous production. Fine in a Fine slipcase in original shipping box.
