First work is the variant with a Latin quotation above the device on title page; the second work lacks the title page and the dedication leaf that follows but is otherwise complete but for the final blank. STC 16630 and 16616. The front blank of the first work contains an early manuscript titled "Epitaph upon the death of the Late Earl of Essex, Earle Marshall of Englande." After a failed coup d'état against the government of Elizabeth I, Robert Devereux, the second Earl of Essex, was beheaded at the age of 34.
