Item #020635 TYPED MANUSCRIPT SIGNED (TMS): ADLAI STEVENSON. Archibald MacLEISH.

TYPED MANUSCRIPT SIGNED (TMS): ADLAI STEVENSON

8 July 1974. Manuscript. A three-page Typed Manuscript on 7-1/2" x 11" onionskin paper SIGNED "Archibald MacLeish" at the top along with the date and the annotation "(not proof-read)" in MacLeish's hand. He has also, under the printed title, written "Memorial Address at the U.N." MacLeish's tribute was read by him at the United Nation's memorial service for Stevenson on 19 July 1965. Part of his speech can be seen on the U.N.'s Audiovisual Library web page. This manuscript differs slightly from that version. MacLeish praises Stevenson in a warm but realistic manner. In part: "He had no taste for power, no desire for it. The remarkable speech in which he accepted the inevitability of his nomination for the presidency was a portrait of himself as ill-advised politically as it was personally honorable. And the two disastrous and superb campaigns which he conducted where [sic] proof that his reluctance at the start was not the reluctance of political calculation but of passionate belief." Rather faint foxing. Near Fine. Item #020635

Price: $500.00
