London: 27 March 1881. Manuscript. On a 7-3/4" x 10-3/4" sheet of paper Lowell has written out the penultimate six-line stanza of his poem "Masaccio" and SIGNED and dated it below.

Thoughts, that great hearts once broke for, we
Breathe cheaply in the common air;
The dust we trample heedlessly
Throbbed once in saints & heroes rare,
Who perished opening for their race
New pathways to the common-place. Crease from being folded. Boldly written and attractive. About Fine. Item #020616
