INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "For Henrik Van Loon/as between scribblers/and herewith admiration/and affection--/Carl Sandburg/1942." Sandburg has also drawn an arrow to Van Loon's first name and added "Henrick Hudson told me to leave the d out." Hendrik Van Loon was a Dutch-American historian, journalist, and children's book author. Among his many books, which he often also illustrated, is THE STORY OF MANKIND, a history of the world intended for children, which won the first Newbery Medal in 1922.
