Austria: 16 June 1969. Letter. A one-page TYPED LETTER SIGNED to a Doubleday editor on 5-3/4" x 8-1/4" Hinterholz 6, Kirchstetten stationery, where Auden lived for awhile. He is buried in a Kirchstetten churchyard. In part: "After various attempts, I have come to the conclusion that I simply cannot translate Yevtushenko's poems, that is to say, I can find no way of combining in English his 'informal' manner with his formal versification. (With Voznoshensky, I somehow found that I could).... I'm terribly sorry about this, but it is silly to try and hide one's incompetence." SIGNED "W. H.
