LOG OF THE CRUISE OF PRESIDENT FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT ABOARD THE SCHOONER YACHT SEWANNA TO MAINE, NOVA SCOTIA, & NEW BRUNSWICK

[Washington]: [Government Printing Office], [1937]. First Edition. Hardcover. A record of a two-week cruise in July, 1936. Original blue cloth with an anchor in gilt on the front cover; [8], 19, [1] pages. Illustrated with a tipped-in frontispiece of the yacht and a large folding chart bound at the end. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the President on the front endpaper: "For Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr./from his affectionate Father/Franklin D. Roosevelt." Franklin, Jr., along with his brothers John and James, were piloted by their father aboard this charted schooner in a trip James called "Pa's prize cruise." Authorship of this log, along with the other eight pre-war logs of presidential cruise-vacations, has not been established, but according to Halter's bibliography, "it is probable that they were the work of several members of each cruise. As far as I had been able to check before this book went to press, a total of 17 logs were issued from 1934-1945." All were privately printed in very small numbers and are virtually unobtainable. When they do show up they are usually not signed or inscribed. While never achieving the renown of his father, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr. was a successful congressman (1949-1954) who twice ran for governor of New York and who was a close friend and early backer of John F. Kennedy. He later became a successful businessman. A scarce book on the market, this is an Association Copy of the highest order. Near Fine. Item #013347
