AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS). Hannibal HAMLIN.

AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS)

26 August 1880. Letter. One-page letter of introduction by Abraham Lincoln's Vice President, dated 26 August 1880. The letter is addressed to the Honorable Horace Davis, and the subject is Major S. W. Knowles who "did good service in the war." SIGNED "H. Hamlin." While Hamlin admired Lincoln, he didn't care much for the rest of Washington's political machine and often felt ignored. Only a few weeks into his term he considered himself the most unimportant man in Washington, and at one point in his Vice-Presidency, he felt so useless and in need of something to do, that he enlisted in the Maine Coast Guard as a cook.
