Handsome gilt-decorated white cloth. While this book is occasionally seen in later editions, this First Edition is very scarce. The history of Queen City baseball goes back to the Cincinnati Red Stockings who in 1869 won the first game ever played by a professional baseball team. In 1935 the Cincinnati Reds won the first night game played in the major leagues at Crosley Field. Minor soiling to the spine; owner name of Richard Phillips on the front endpaper.

Small octavo (4-1/8" x 6-7/8") in original purple cloth with a gilt spine decoration consisting of a banner, a bat, and a ball; [5], 6-282 pages. THE FIRST NOVEL PUBLISHED TO PROMINENTLY FEATURE THE SPORT OF BASEBALL. Illustrated with four full-page plates, including one action depiction of a baseball game. Published the same year as the first professional team was born, the Cincinnati Red Stockings, this book for young readers follows its hero through school where he joins a "base ball club," otherwise known as "the nine." Although baseball had been mentioned previously, though sparingly, this was the first book where the infant sport was central to the story. It wasn't until 15 years later (1884) that a book was published that was entirely devoted to baseball (OUR BASE BALL CLUB AND HOW IT WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP.) There are some fascinating references in CHANGING BASE to the still evolving sport, including the "new" rule of calling balls and strikes. The author, who was elected to Congress in 1893, was the son of a more famous politician, Edward Everett, best known for giving the "other" speech at Gettysburg.

...CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES, "MUFFIN" MATCHES AND THE GAME ON ICE. FULL DIRECTIONS FOR SCORERS, FORMATION OF CLUBS AND SELECTION OF NINES. THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION, AND A LARGE QUANTITY OF OTHER INSTRUCTIVE AND ENTERTAINING MATTER. Small octavo (4" x 6-3/8") in original gold wraps depicting a pitcher in uniform on the front about to throw a ball; [iv], 9-100 pages, plus covers. A very early rule book, illustrated with a frontispiece full-page engraving of two teams playing on a field as well as a diagram of a baseball field and a few small engravings in the text. Includes the constitution and the by-laws "founded chiefly on those of the Active Base-Ball Club of the City of New York." Also contains rules for players and umpires, including a prohibition on betting, as well as descriptions of the requirements for each position. A very useful index follows. The author was the secretary for the New York Base-Ball Association. An old dampstain affects most of the page throughout but is very light and hardly noticeable. The front wrap has a small chip in the upper right corner slightly affecting the price, and there are two small pieces lacking from the spine. The rear cover is detached but present. Someone long ago used three pieces of adhesive tape to keep the rear cover on, and while those pieces are no longer present there is a slight shadow visible. The front cover is on securely.
