Original highly gilt-decorated reddish-brown calf, a superb publisher's gift binding. BAL 4024 & 16143. The first appearance in print of this classic Poe piece collected the same year in his TALES. Other first appearances include Longfellow (BAL 12074) and Emerson (BAL 5202). This copy, which lacks 4 of the 8 plates (no plates illustrated Poe's tale), has very little foxing and is in a very attractive and fairly well-preserved publisher's binding. Minor edgewear and rubbing, light chipping to spine head.

Folio (8" x 12-1/2") bound in library buckram; irregularly paginated: [10], 502, [58] pages. Illustrated with 273 woodcuts, many full and half page. Previously published in 1556 and 1561, this edition seems scarcer than either of the previous. PRINTING & THE MIND OF MAN 79: "The first systematic treatise on mining and metallurgy and one of the first technological books of modern times." Herbert Hoover, who first translated this book into English, described this title in his autobiography as "the first important attempt to assemble systematically in print the world-knowledge on mining, metallurgy, and industrial chemistry. It was the great textbook of those industries for two centuries and had dominated thought and practice all that time. In many mining regions and camps, including the Spanish South America, it was chained to the church altar and translated by the priest to the miners between religious services." The woodcut impressions are strong and dark. As customary with this title, there is browning throughout, occasionally heavy. Small piece of title page repaired with no loss of text or illustration; ink names of David Stuart dated 1771 and Joseph Robertson dated 1830 on title page. Library bookplate on front pastedown and small ink number on the title page illustration; no other library markings except for numbers on the spine. An important and richly illustrated title.

Anderson's third and best known book, one of the most important books of American fiction of the twentieth century, this copy with all first issue points: map on front pastedown; title page frame unbroken; "lay" for "lie" on page 86, line 5; and broken type on page 251, line 3; top edge stained yellow matching the cloth. SIGNED by the author on the half-title page just below the title "Winesburg, Ohio." Small leather bookplate on upper left corner of the front pastedown with slight offsetting to the front endpaper. The yellow cloth is lightly soiled, moreso to the spine which is sunned as well. The white paper spine label is intact, though a little wrinkled and soiled. Contents are tight and clean. Housed in a plain black cloth slipcase.

[14] 654 [30] pages. Royal octavo bound in early full vellum. Illustrated with an engraved title page, 51 full-page woodcuts, ornamental headpieces, and initial letters. The woodcuts, within decorative borders, are after the designs of Dossa Dossi, the Ferrarese painter. Some of the impressions are weak, but most are quite presentable.

Large folio (13" x 17") bound in contemporary gilt-decorated half calf, covers now detached but present. Illustrated with an engraved title page, two portraits, and 98 full-page copper engravings nearly all of which represent various scenes from plays, including one engraved by William Blake, and are engraved after the major British artists of the day: Reynolds, Romney, Opie, Smirke, Northcote, Westall, etc. The finest illustrations ever created to accompany Shakespeare, here presented in their original large format (the plates were also published as part of a nine-volume folio set of Shakespeare's dramatic works). A difficult title to find intact as most volumes over the years have been broken for their beautiful individual plates which in this volume are generally quite clean with all tissue guards present. A small dampstain is at the very bottom blank margin of maybe a dozen plates and there is also sporadic foxing, again mostly contained to the blank margins. The frontispiece plate has a wrinkle from misfolding. Early owner signature on title page and advertisement leaf. Please note that there was a larger issue of this book (19-1/2" x 28-1/2") that is much scarcer and usually sells for close to five figures.

Folio (7-3/4" x 12-1/8") bound in recent half calf and marbled boards with calf corners and a gilt-ruled spine with six raised bands and a gilt-lettered black morocco spine label. [8], viii, [24], x, 9-186 pages. Illustrated with an engraved portrait and 42 fine full-page engraved plates. First published in 1681 under the title A COMPLEAT TREATISE OF THE MUSCLES. The description of the muscles is based on the work of William Molins, and the plates partly on Giulio Casserio's TABULA ANATOMICAE. This is a reissue of the 1698 edition with a new title page and four additonal pages of congratulatory letters. HEIRS OF HIPPOCRATES 422 (1681 edition): "John Browne, physician to King Charles II, James II, and William III, was primarily a surgeon.... His most important contribution was one of the clearest early descriptions of cirrhosis of the liver.... In spite of blatant plagiarism, his book was widely read ... going through ten editions"; Wellcome, p. 251. OCLC locates only three copies worldwide. Margins trimmed close to images but not impacting them. Frontispiece portrait a little ragged with short tears and old tape repair on verso. Leaf Hh ragged with long repaired tear and marginal loss slightly affecting a few words near gutter. Small owner signature on title page of Thomas Laurence, Surgeon, dated 1749.
