Folio (11" x 15") consisting of 20 loose LITHOGRAPHS on stone and zinc, each SIGNED in pencil by the artist. The text consists of the title page, a three-page introduction by Morris Philipson, a printed list of the lithographs, and the limitation page. Copy #40 of 100 numbered copies printed on Rives BFK and housed in a cloth clamshell box. From the introduction: "Jacob Landau, a humanist whose art has probed the opposition and conjunction of fantasy and horror, knowledge and mystery, has found in Hoffmann's anticipations of modern literature and life reflections of his obsessions. His homage took form in a remarkable suite of color lithographs completed in Paris with the help of a Guggenheim fellowship. In another form, as reproductions made from black and white proofs of the originals, they contribute to enhancing a major publishing event--issuance by the University of Chicago Press of Selected Writings of E. T. A Hoffmann in two volumes, edited, translated and introduced by Leonard J. Kent and Elizabeth C. Knight." This copy is also INSCRIBED in pencil by the artist beneath his printed name on the title page "For my dearest Francesca."

Thin octavo (5-3/4" x 9-1/8") bound in contemporary blue boards with a tan cloth spine and corners, recently rebacked with a new sympathetic cloth spine; viii, 86, (2) pages including the half title, a frontispiece engraved portrait of Goethe, and the list of plates by Retsch with the errata printed on the verso. The First Edition of the FIRST COMPLETE ENGLISH TRANSLATION of the first part of Goethe's Tragedy of Faust. The anonymous translation was originally credited to George Soane, but literary scholarship revealed in 2007 that Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the poet of tormented guilt and of the demonic and the supernatural, was the actual translator. There are several editions of this book; the one with the accompanying plates was issued after this edition without plates. All editions are quite scarce, especially this one and especially when complete. Light to moderate foxing.

Original printed wraps with the front cover neatly and professionally reattached. The Nobel Prize winner's very scarce second book, written when he was 22 and working in a bookstore. Most copies seem to have been rebound in cloth and boards due to the fragile original binding. With a four-line INSCRIPTION in German by the author dated August 1906 and SIGNED in full. The inscription refers to the place that served as the setting for the stories of the book and is the location where Hesse inscribed the volume. Books inscribed by the author of STEPPENWOLF and SIDDHARTHA are decidedly uncommon.
