Octavo (5" x 8-3/8") bound in contemporary tree calf with a gilt-lettered burgundy morocco spine label. Includes the July - December 1788 issues of this, one of the most important miscellaneous magazines of the eighteenth century. The subscriber's list includes George Washington and many of the important figures in early American history. Contains much related to the new country including the Bill of Rights, Constitutional Amendments, and the various states' ratification of the Constitution. Also articles on slavery and other matters. Early bookplate of the Library of the German Society on the front pastedown over two other early bookplates, one apparently another Philadelphia institution and the other a mystery; early ink library numbers on the front endpaper. Small hole on one leaf with loss of a few words; another leaf with clean tear and no loss. Light browning throughout. The G signature for Issue Two is duplicated at Issue Four with the resulting loss of the G signature for the latter issue. Front cover holding by two cords with the front edge darkened as is the spine. The leather is dry but has been treated and is now stable.

Four quarto (8-1/2" x 11") volumes bound in contemporary sheep with the owner's coat of arms stamped on all covers, recently rebacked with new calf spines with gilt-lettered contrasting morocco spine labels. Illustrated with two plates, one folding. The Earl of Bedford's copy with his arms on the covers and his Woburn Abbey bookplates dated 1873 on the front pastedowns.

Large folio (13" x 17") bound in contemporary gilt-decorated half calf, covers now detached but present. Illustrated with an engraved title page, two portraits, and 98 full-page copper engravings nearly all of which represent various scenes from plays, including one engraved by William Blake, and are engraved after the major British artists of the day: Reynolds, Romney, Opie, Smirke, Northcote, Westall, etc. The finest illustrations ever created to accompany Shakespeare, here presented in their original large format (the plates were also published as part of a nine-volume folio set of Shakespeare's dramatic works). A difficult title to find intact as most volumes over the years have been broken for their beautiful individual plates which in this volume are generally quite clean with all tissue guards present. A small dampstain is at the very bottom blank margin of maybe a dozen plates and there is also sporadic foxing, again mostly contained to the blank margins. The frontispiece plate has a wrinkle from misfolding. Early owner signature on title page and advertisement leaf. Please note that there was a larger issue of this book (19-1/2" x 28-1/2") that is much scarcer and usually sells for close to five figures.
